Brand Overview

Since its founding in 1959 (under the name Industrial Research), R&D has served research scientists, engineers, and technical staff members at government, academic and industrial laboratories around the world.

Market Overview

Driving Innovation Through Effective Research Strategies and Technological Change

Laboratory R&D professionals across the globe face numerous challenges while striving to play a key role in significant advancements in research that improve our nation. Pressure is on these professionals to secure and obtain funding in a now-stabilizing economy, while devising innovative ideas and making them a reality to improve our everyday lives and futures.

The laboratory is a complex organism of workers, including technicians, scientists, engineers, supervisors, project managers, and laboratory owners. When integrated effectively, this hierarchy of responsibility is an extraordinarily effective generator of practical science, resulting in advances and innovations in many, if not all, major industries. This includes machinery, computers, chemicals, food, transportation, and healthcare. Laboratory workers must be familiar with strategies for effective research, the care and function of tools for scientific research and the efficient design and management of facilities used for R&D. Laboratory administrators must have access to the bigger picture. They need to evaluate trends and numbers so as to know where to direct research money and efforts. And program administrators must be able to manage their project teams effectively by procuring and implementing the appropriate tools for the research job.

According to recent analysis by R&D Magazine, the U.S. and Canada currently account for about a third of the global R&D investments in 2013, while Asian countries (including Japan) account for about 40% and European countries account for about a quarter. The Americas and Europe are each losing about 0.5% share each year, while Asia continues to pick up more than 1% global share each year. At this rate, more than half of all the R&D spent in the world will be spent in Asia by 2020, with about 20% spent in Europe and less than 25% spent in the U.S. These sobering facts relate to where the new technologies will come from and the leading drivers for technological change.

November 7, 2014 Bellagio - Las Vegas, NV

Widely recognized as the “Oscars of Invention,” the R&D 100 Awards identify and celebrate the top technology products of the year. Past winners have included sophisticated testing equipment, innovative new materials, chemistry breakthroughs, biomedical products, consumer items, and high-energy physics. The R&D 100 Awards spans industry, academia, and government-sponsored research.

Many have become household names, helping shape everyday life for many Americans, including the flashcube (1965), automated teller machine (1973), halogen lamp (1974), fax machine (1975), liquid crystal display (1980), Kodak Photo CD (1991), Nicoderm anti-smoking patch (1992), Taxol anticancer drug (1993), lab on a chip (1996), and HDTV (1998). More recent breakthroughs that have earned R&D 100 Awards and could have a lasting impact include dissolvable arterial stents, robotic limbs made with additive manufacturing, and advanced laser technologies that could pave the way to practical nuclear fission.
