Who’s behind cleaner coal, smarter headrests, friendlier
mammograms,
“jump-off-the-page” advertising and more: R&D Magazine Announces Recipients
of its 45TH Annual R&D 100 Awards
10/01/2007 - Chicago, IL - Advertising that “jumps off the page,” thanks to advances in digital printing. Cameras on a chip. “Powerless” computer memory. Economical and environmentally-friendly ways to repurpose or harvest old energy sources, whether it’s strip-mined coal or consumer batteries. More accurate, less intrusive mammography systems. Radar chips implanted in a car’s headrest designed to reduce whiplash risk. Biotech devices with tremendous potential to deliver accuracy and economy to health care providers in the world’s underdeveloped regions. These innovations are just some of the winning entries of the 45th annual R&D 100 Awards, sponsored by R&D Magazine. According to Tim Studt, R&D editor-in-chief, “Some of the most important technology breakthroughs of the past half-century emanate from R&D readers’ creativity. In many cases, it’s the ‘big idea’ brought down to the very personal level. Consider antilock brakes, ATMs, the antismoking patch, fax machines, flashbulbs, photo CDs and HDTV — all of these innovations are former R&D 100 award winners.”
Studt continued, “We’re continually asked, ‘what makes an R&D 100 winner?’ We look for the 100 most technologically significant products and processes of the year that can change people's lives for the better, enhance economic opportunity, and encourage creativity and expansion of imagination.”

About the R&D 100 Awards:
Dubbed “The Oscars of Invention” by The Chicago Tribune, since 1963, the prestigious R&D 100 Awards have given innovators, their ideas, and their sponsoring organizations that important initial “push” necessary for marketplace success. The winning of an R&D 100 Award provides a mark of excellence known to industry, government, and academia as proof that the product is one of the most innovative ideas of the year.
