Continuity Insights’ Crisis Communications Survey & Webinar Prove Social Media Is Here To Stay

Madison, WI: Continuity Insights, the premiere source for business continuity news and insight from management’s perspective, released its third-annual crisis communications survey this month:Crisis Communications 2014: Social Media & Notification Systems, which provides unique insight into recent trends and notable changes in the ways that organizations use social media and notification systems to communicate. The results of the survey were further examined in an hour-long companion webinar.

This year’s survey shows that nearly 62% of organizations plan to use social media to gather information during a crisis, up from 52% in 2012 and 60% in 2013. It also illustrates that organizations are using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube more than ever before.

The companion webinar included an overview of the survey results by knowledgeable panelists, whose diverse backgrounds allowed them to offer unique perspectives on today’s crisis communication trends. Panelists included Brian Gray from the United Nations, Suzanne Bernier from SB Crisis Consulting and Daniel Hahn from the Santa Rosa County Florida Division of Emergency Management.

Panelists offered communication guidance to organizations including:

  • All messaging, through both traditional and social media must be vetted and approved before releasing to help mitigate the spread of misinformation.
  • Organizations should actively monitor social media to identify and shut down rumors before they spread.
  • Social media should be viewed as an additional way of getting emergency messaging out, not the only way.
  • Your organization’s social media objectives should be identified early on.

The panelists concluded the webinar by agreeing that one fact is clear: Social media is here to stay and cannot be ignored.
